A message from Andy Bornemisza from below:-

World Veterans Fencing Championships 2018

We (Amdy & Lynne) travelled to Livorno in Northern Italy on October 8th for Andy to take part in the World Championships. There were 38 entered in his Age Category from eighteen different countries.

Andy fenced very well in his first round group beating Spertini from France 5-2, Mimata from Japan 5-2 , Pinkus from USA 5-4 (very close fight!) and Kunchev from Bulgaria 5-2. He only lost one fight to Filipi from Italy who finished second overall last year!

At the end of the first round he was ranked 6th a good position to go into the Direct Elimination. He won his first knockout easily against William Carson USA beating him 10-1. We then moved onto the coloured pistes in the Main Arena we knew the next opponent was going to be tough as in his first fight he had eliminated the number 9 seed. He was very forceful and unconventional and sadly Andy lost the fight. However he finished in 10th position in his Age Group in the World which is a tremendous achievement.

In the Sabre team event we drew Canada and Italy as our group matches. We beat Canada and narrowly lost to Italy. Sadly we drew Italy in the knockout and they were too strong!

There were other good results from British fencers in the Mens and Womens Foil also in the team events where Mens and Womens Foil took Gold medals while Womens Sabre took the Silver.

Excellent turnout for the competition with 56 countries represented.
